Cable selection is based on purpose, current load and installation conditions. The wrong cross-section causes overheating and energy loss.
| Type | Use |
|---|---|
| Power (NYY, NYM) | Supply lines, lighting, sockets — copper or aluminium |
| Control | Automation, alarm — multi-core |
| Data (UTP/FTP) | Network, IP cameras — Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6a |
| Fire-rated (FR, E30/E90) | Fire-resistant — evacuation/PA lines |
| Cross-section | Rated current | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 mm² | ~16A | Lighting |
| 2.5 mm² | ~20–25A | Sockets |
| 4 mm² | ~25–32A | Sub-board/boiler |
| 6 mm² | ~40A | Electric stove/service |
| 10 mm²+ | 50A+ | Service/power |
Tip: the cross-section must match the load + installation conditions (in air/conduit/ground); on a long run account for voltage drop (keep it <3%). Aluminium is cheaper but needs a larger cross-section for the same current. Copper offers better conductivity and reliability.
